Canada 150 Challenge

Gail Dever of Genealogy à la carte
challenged her readers to list their ancestors who were living in Canada in 1867.

My ancestors who were in Canada in 1867 are all on my mother's side of the family. Until I began to research the family history, I didn't realize that her ancestors were in Canada pre-confederation. My father's parents and paternal grandmother didn't come to Canada until 1905. His paternal grandfather likely came to Canada about 1903.

My ancestral surnames that were in Canada prior to confederation were: Stiver (1794), Johnston (1833), Love (about 1842), Hemingway (about 1800), Chambers (in the 1840s), Robinson (mid-1850s), and the McKenzie line (in the 1840s).

Living in 1867 were:
James Love (1852-1914) -- in 1867 likely living in Wentworth County, Ontario.
Elizabeth Fields Robinson (1859-1932) in 1867 either living in Toronto area or in Collingwood Township, Grey County, Ontario.
Josiah Hemingway Johnston (1845-1919) in 1867 living in Markham Township, York County, Ontario
Agnes Chambers (1855-1922) in 1867 likely in Altona, Pickering Township, Ontario County, Ontario
Agnes Vincer (nee Hamilton) (former Love) (1819-1895) likely living in Wentworth County, Ontario in 1867.
John Robinson (1828-1905) either living in Toronto area or in Collingwood Township, Grey County, Ontario.
Jane Robinson (nee Fields) (1828-about 1901) either living in Toronto area or in Collingwood Township, Grey County, Ontario.
David Johnston (1816-1892) in 1867 living in Unionville, Markham Township, York County, Ontario
Hannah Johnston (nee Hemingway) (1819-1887) in 1867 living in Unionville, Markham Township, York County, Ontario
Mary Wilson (nee McKenzie) former Chambers living in 1867 likely in Altona, Pickering Township, Ontario County, Ontario

I wonder what my ancestors thought about confederation. Was July 1st, 1867 just another day for them?

Happy Canada Day 150!
